Kit's World
Kit's Clothes, Accessories and Books

First Three Kit Books
Kit™ Kittredge, the long-awaited American Girl™ has a fascinating story that teaches children about the Great Depression, as well as the importance of giving to those less fortunate. But, of course, Kit is also a doll, and as such she has a fabulous array of clothing and accessories available.

About the DOLL...

In Part One of this article we learn all about Kit's story and Kit's Can-Do Challenge. Here, we are going to talk about the DOLL. Kit is the first American Girl doll to have freckles, and the first to have short hair. As are all the American Girl dolls, she is 18 inches tall, and has a huggable, soft body with head, arms and legs that are poseable. She has blue eyes and shoulder-length blond hair pulled back in a barrette. Her basic costume is a lilac sweater set and floral linen skirt, with white cotton underwear and white sandals. The first book in the series, Meet Kit, is included with the doll, which retails for $84 with a paperback book or $90 with a hardcover book.

About the Clothes...

In our family, Grandma took a look at the American Girl catalog, and huffed "Girls did NOT have clothes that nice during the Depression! (not that this has stopped Grandma from already ordering the doll for my daughter for Christmas, mind you...). But, keep in mind that Kit's family was well-off before they were impacted by the Depression, so it makes sense that Kit has her lovely clothing. Outfits available separately for the doll so far include a School Outfit, which is a plain plaid jumper and a white blouse, knee socks and brown-oxford shoes, a lovely Christmas outfit which features a red dress with a Scottie-dog pin, tights and patent leather shoes, and a pajama set.

About the Accessories....

One of the most delightful things about the entire American Girl line of dolls are the fabulous accessories. For Kit, one of my absolute favorites is the little typewriter which comes in the Typewriter set. The typewriter (see below) is made of black metal, and you can press the keys, and the typewriter carriage moves. At the end of a line it "dings" just like real typewriters used to, and you can push the carriage back for the "start" of the next line, complete with real sound-effects! Another NOT to be missed accessory is the Dresser Trunk. Kit has the trunk because it is her mother's old trunk and is used for her clothes when she is moved to the attic. The trunk is burgundy vinyl, with real metal hardware. It has a place for the doll in the top of the trunk, and draws below for clothes and accessories. Collectors of 16" fashion dolls may well want this trunk for their Genes or Tylers and all of their wonderful clothes and accessories! The Typewriter set sells for $22, and the Dresser Trunk is $155, which is a bit pricey, but the trunk appears to be of very high quality.

Other accessories include a roll-top desk and swivel chair, an aviator doll, (Amelia Earhart--a darling cloth doll) a waffle iron set, (JUST like my grandmother had!) a book bag and supplies, a school lunch, and a day bed.

About The Books.....

The American Girl books are well-written and educational. Here is a brief synopsis of the first three books about Kit Kittredge (an additional three books will be available in 2001):

Where To Buy Kit!

You can buy Kit and her clothes, accessories and books at the American Girl Store online, or you can request a catalog from 1-800-845-0005. You can also buy Kit at the American Girl Store in Chicago. Finally, American Girl books are available in bookstores nationwide.

Book 1: Meet Kit: In Meet Kit, Kit Kittredge is enjoying the carefree life she has always known--until suddenly her world turns upside down. First, Mother's friend and her sickly, pampered son Stirling come to live with the family. Then, Kit's dad loses his business, and things go from bad to worse. Will life ever be the same again?

Book 2: Kit Learns A Lesson: In Kit Learns a Lesson, Kit hopes her father will find a new job soon so that things can return to normal, with no boarders in the house and no long list of daily chores for her to do! But a visit to a soup kitchen shocks Kit--and shows her just how much the Great Depression has changed everything.

Book Three: Kit's Surprise: In Kit's Surprise, it's just before Christmas when Kit overhears the terrible news that her family may lose their house. Kit wants to earn money to help out, but she gets stuck taking care of cranky Uncle Hendrick and his nasty dog Inky instead. Kit and her best friend have had a fight, so she has no one to turn to. Can she still find a way to make the holidays bright?
