"Josie and the Pussycats!
Long tails and ears for hats.
Guitars and sharps and flats.
Neat, sweet and groovy song
You're invited, come along!"

Nearly any late baby boomer can tell you that those are the lyrics to the wildly popular Saturday morning cartoon series from the 1970s, "Josie and the Pussycats."  Once again, to help prove the old adage "what's old is new," Josie and her friends are hip, talked-about and popular in 2001, thanks to  the new Universal Studios movie by the same name.  But...have you heard that JAKKS Pacific has produced a wonderful set of dolls that resemble the Pussycats from the movie?

The new "Josie and the Pussycats" film, a live-action comedy based on the comic book series with music produced and composed by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, is now in wide release.  And, right now on the toy shelves of Toys R Us and other major toy retailers, you will find JAAKS Pacific's new line of 11.5" fashion dolls under their G.I.R.L. Force brand, based on each of the Josie and the Pussycats characters.  The characters are Josie (Rachael Leigh Cook), the redheaded heart, soul and lead singer of the band; Valerie (Rosario Dawson) the beautiful and reliant bassist; plus Melody (Tara Reid), the bubbly blonde, animal-loving drummer. Each Pussycat's doll is accompanied with her character's own microphone with stand, and her appropriate musical instrument.

Innovative Technology Enhances The Look Of The Dolls

Using REAL SCAN technology, JAKKS' doll designers worked with the three female movie's stars, taking 360 degree scans of their heads to achieve close to 100% accuracy for the sculpts of the doll's faces.  Another fascinating feature is the dolls' revolutionary life-like bodies.  The Pussycat fashion dolls have 16 points of articulation and can capture the rock star poses and action feel and fashions from the movie for "purrfect" play value.

"JAKKS has a strong track record for aligning with evergreen properties, and we feel that Josie and the Pussycats is the ultimate retro-brand" said Stephen Berman, President and COO, JAKKS Pacific.  "We are thrilled that Universal chose the G.I.R.L. Force body to represent the new Pussycats for this film."

"Josie is a hot contemporary property," said Tim Rothwell, JAKKS senior vice president, licensing, merchandising and retail development.  "The lifelike dolls reflect the music and fashion of today.  Retailers are looking for strong girl properties that girls can identify with."  Evidently JAKKS thinks that these dolls will BE that type of strong, lasting property that will sustain the Josie dolls to be more than a flash in the pan.

If you are a real Josie and the Pussycats fan, there are many other licensed  products from the movie that are just hitting store shelves, including apparel and accessories, gifts and stationery, home furnishings, health and beauty, collectibles and other toys. These items will be available at most large retailers and selected gift stores.

A Bit About The Movie

Josie, Melody and Val are three small-town girl musicians determined to take their rock band out of their garage and straight to the top--while remaining true to their own look, style and sound.  When the girls are "discovered" by band manager Wyatt Frame (Alan Cummings) and Mega Records CEO Fiona (Parker Posey) who instantly offers them a recording contract, it looks as if Josie and the Pussycats are on their way.

The movie is based on the popular Archie comic book (and not the cartoon series from the 70s).  Josie and the Pussycats features some of the hottest young actors working in Hollywood today, as well as an all-new music soundtrack from some of the music industry's hottest names.  The film is written and directed by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont and produced by Marc Platt and Tracey Edmonds.  Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds serves as the music producer/composer.  A note to parents:  please consult movie ratings at www.filmratings.com when making viewing choices for your children.

As for the dolls, only time will tell if they will last on store shelves longer than the movie takes to get to home video.  By the way, don't miss the photos of the dolls.  The tails and ears are adorable!
