TWO FACED #159 GERMAN BISQUE DOLL

submitted by Barry Millar

doublefacedoll.jpg (10042 bytes) The doll was handed down from my wife's mother to my wife. She recalls that her mother may have said that it belonged to her mother ( born about 1875), however she is not certain. She was never allowed to play with the doll ... only to look at it .. so the doll today is intact with no broken parts or visible  deterioration.

The body and limbs are all the same material .. a hard plaster like substance. The limbs and head mate the body by means of spud like protrusions.    There is a means internal to the body that permits 180 degree movement of the head and limbs relative to the body.

The head is made of a similar, but possibly better quality material ... the painted features are very delicate and show no deterioration. The eyes of the happy face close when the doll is supine then open when upright. The eyes of the sad face are fixed at half open position.

The numeral "6" is cast into the neck area of the happy face and numerals "159" into the neck area of the sad face.
