NEWS

home_chicklet1(1).gif (311 bytes)Winners of the About Dolls Dog Days Contest!:   The contest winners are being drawn today at approximately 2pm Pacific time US, which is 5pm eastern time US.  The list of winners should be up no later than 3pm Pacific, which is 6pm Eastern at this page: About Dolls Dog Days Contest Winners.  If you have won a prize, you must e-mail your Guide at collectdolls.guide@about.com within a week so your prize can be shipped to you.  To all the winners, congratulations, and to everyone who entered the contest--especially those who answered all 25 questions--thank you for playing along!

home_chicklet1(1).gif (311 bytes)Modern Doll Collectors Convention:  I haven't given this wonderful, upcoming convention focusing on modern fashion dolls much coverage because it has been booked solid for quite some time (there is a waiting list).  HOWEVER, start making plans for the 2001 Modern Doll Collectors Convention, "Bewitching Beauties,"  which will be held in New Orleans in the first week of October.  If you ARE going to this year's convention, themed "Focus On Fashion," with special guests including Mel Odom, Robert Tonner, Herb Brown of the Madame Alexander Company and others, it promises to be amazing.  The convention doll is a Gene, and there will be seminars on doll makeovers and costuming, plus programs and lunches focusing on every type of fashion doll imaginable.  The convention doll is a Gene doll.  I will be attending, and giving a presentation entitled "Fashion Dolls Throughout the Ages" on Thursday, so be SURE to stop by and say hello!  For more information:  Modern Doll Collectors Convention

home_chicklet1(1).gif (311 bytes)New Barbie Releases:  New releases include a VERY cute Country Charm Barbie (available at Cracker Barrel stores) and this years Holiday doll for grocery stores,Surprise™"> Holiday Surprise Barbie (A nice, closed-mouth doll dressed in a sophisticated gray and burgundy outfit for only $11.00!)  There is an Surprise™%20(Ethnic)">African-American version of this doll also, but it has an open mouth.  The pictures of these dolls are from the Mattel Consumer Service Center.

home_chicklet1(1).gif (311 bytes)John F. Kennedy GI Joe Doll Unveiled:  On Wednesday, Hasbro introduced its "GI Joe John F. Kennedy PT 109 Commander Doll at the late president's library in Boston.  Only 100,000 of these dolls will be produced, and they will be available at major toy stores in a few weeks, priced at $30-$35. The doll will be dressed in World War II US Navy khakis.  This is a very nice looking doll, and I think it will be a cross-over collectible for many people.  For the full story, and a picture of the doll, see Latest GI Joe Doll: John Kennedy at MSNBC.com

home_chicklet1(1).gif (311 bytes)Other Views on Barbie:  Our About Collectibles Guide admits that she doesn't collect Barbie, but there are a few that  even she cannot resist!  Her new article points out several types of Barbies made specifically for collectors of other things...and, she especially likes the new Fashion Model/Lingerie Barbie, which she calls "Playgirl Barbie"
I'm Not A Barbie Collector....But..

home_chicklet1(1).gif (311 bytes)Jill Barad Has A New Position:  And, its far from the world of dolls.  Ms. Barad, the former CEO of Mattel, Inc. has been named to the Board of Directors of Leap, Wireless.

home_chicklet1(1).gif (311 bytes)Not Doll Related But I Thought You'd Care:  Many of us who collect/are nostalgic for dolls from the 1960s also played with View Masters as children.  I had one, and I played with it for hours at end (and, I still have all my original reels).  Well, an era has come to the end, and in the face of changing tastes in children, View Master has closed its last factory in the United States.  Kinda makes that little toy View Master that comes with Cool Collecting Barbie even more special, in a poignant sort of way.  This move (View Master is owned by Mattel) will leave Etch-A-Sketch as the last baby boomer mechanical toy still in production in the US. View Masters WILL continue in production, but in Mexico.
