This year, the Doll and Teddy Bear Expo celebrates its 10th anniversary August 29 - August 31, 2003 at the Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. More than 6,000 attendees will enjoy the latest industry happenings, introductions, information and offerings with the world's leading teddy bear and doll artists, manufacturers, collectors and enthusiasts. There will also be a variety of club and company-sponsored events at the expo, plus exhibitors representing over 150 artists.
Focus On Dolls
According to Joe Jones, President of Jones Publishing, the sponsor of the event, this year's Expo will be bigger, better and a whole lot more fun than last year, which focused on the 100th birthday of the teddy bear. Says Jones, "Last year was for teddy bears, but this year we'll be featuring special events for both dolls and teddies. Besides visiting the wonderful exhibits, this year attendees will have the opportunity to see first hand how the dolls and teddy bears are made."
Mr. Jones continued" "Rainer Martin of Rainer Martin Teddy Bears and Dolls (Germany) will be demonstrating the age-old tradition of handcrafting fine quality teddy bears, and renowned doll artist/sculptor Berdine Creedy will host a dollmaking workshop where attendees will assemble and dress their own limited edition doll. We're also delighted that fitness guru Richard Simmons, an ardent doll and teddy bear enthusiast and collector, will be with us."
The Art of American Dollmaking
If last year was the "year of the teddy," this year could be considered the "year of the doll" with the myriad of major doll company anniversaries in 2003. This year marks the 80th anniversary of Madame Alexander Dolls, who is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of "Wendy," the company's most famous and popular doll. To mark the occasion, the attendees who register for the Expo hotel package will receive a limited edition Madame Alexander "Making Music" Wendy doll.
Lee Middleton Original Dolls is celebrating "25 years of love" this year, and will have award-winning artist Reva Schick at their booth for a special artist signing. The legendary Effanbee Doll Company, the oldest continuous doll manufacturer in America, will celebrate the 75th anniversary of "Patsy," its most renowned doll, with a limited edition (150 pieces) Patsyette & Wee Patsy Hat Box Set, a highly collectible exclusive show special available only for purchase by Expo attendees.
Teddy Bears On Parade
Expo's teddy bears will be sharing the spotlight with a several events. At Portfolio Press you can meet author Martin Wach and co-author and illustrator Delia Wach, who will be launching their new children's book, "Teddy Bear Guardians of the Rainforest" at Expo. Or join The Toy Shoppe of Richmond, Virginia for a "teddy bear breakfast" featuring presentations by noted artist, historian, and expert Dee Hockenberry (who will be bringing some "friends" from her famous collection) and by Steiff North America president Martin Frechen.
The good bears of Good Bears of the World (who send teddy bears to those in need of a reassuring hug and a teddy bear companion) will be at Expo once again hosting their charity teddy bear auction, which has become a highlight of the Expo. Teddy bear enthusiasts will also want to visit the Books, Bears & Bonnets booth to participate in one of the raffles they will sponsor throughout the weekend. The organization helps children and adults cope with their life saving journeys against cancer by providing special gift boxes containing a book (to ease the mind), a friendly stuffed animal (for the heart) and a hat (to lovingly cover the head with warm thoughts). There will also be a bear appraiser at the Expo, with all proceeds going to charity.
