Is Your Collecting Out of Hand? Do You Want to Be on Reality TV?

Friday September 12, 2003
The producers of MTV's "The Real World" are looking for a collector with an out-of-control collecting habit to appear on their new show, "Starting Over." Of course, I thought it was interesting that the producers thought of collectors when they thought of "hoarders or packrats." The new reality TV show will be focued on women overcoming issues and problems in their lives. As Shannon McCarty, the Casting Associate told me, "Considering that some people take collecting to the extreme, this could be something that we could help with."

Hmm, I wonder, as I sweep the dolls off my chair and try to find a place to put them on my desk, whatever could she mean?

In any event, the catch is that you must live in the Chicago area or surrounding suburbs to be eligible to appear on the show. Here is the remaining "pitch":

"Are you a "Hoarder or "Packrat" in the Chicago Area?

Is clutter is taking over your life? Would you like to receive help while sharing your story with a television audience?

If selected to appear on our show, you will receive one-on-one counseling from Certified Life Coaches as well as experts in Hoarding and Packrat behavior.

To be considered for this unique opportunity, please email eshenkman@bunim-murray.com and tell us your story. Make sure to include your name, age, and telephone number. Please note, this opportunity is open to WOMAN ONLY, and you MUST CURRENTLY RESIDE IN CHICAGO OR SUBURBS."

The show will be set in Chicago, and it is a daytime reality series that will follow an ever changing group of diverse and captivating women as they attempt to make extraordinary changes in their lives -- all while living under the same roof. If you are trapped in a dead-end career, unable to take the steps to find new love after a failed relationship, buried in debt, or just need to kickstart your life, here is your chance to "start over."

Visit Startingover.com for more information. By the way, if you DO see this here and you end up on the show, please e-mail me at collectdolls.guide@about.com to let me know--I'd love to do an article on your experience there!

I have a collection of international dolls representing 186 countries and regions. Some countries, such as Andorra have only 2 representatives, a girl and boy set, while Great Britain, Italy, and Spain have many more.I started collecting about 10 years ago on a job swap in London and have added Caribbean dolls from 6 English Speaking countries on my recent Peace Corps tour. I have had the idea of starting a lending library for schools and libraries, and most recently have lent dolls on China and Israel for my grandchildren’s social science projects.

However, my daughter says I am a hoarder, with full blown symptoms of Obsessive Compuslive Disorder and need to get rid of many of them. Which country, which region ? How do I start. There are virtually no duplicates.

I am steeling myself to call the Salvation Army and have them all towed away, including the books that go with them and consider that I am on the road to recovery from this mental illness.

I will kill my web page and find something else to occupy my thoughts. This article, though quite a few years old, with no comments prompted me to write this.
