My Very First Tyler Wentworth Doll
I'll never forget my first look at Tyler Wentworth. My local doll shop had decided to carry the line, and the owner called me immediately when it came in, since she knew I liked fashion dolls (I already had an extensive collection of vintage Barbie and earlier fashion dolls, and I had already begun to collect the also new Gene fashion dolls). It was love at first sight...I hadn't been this drawn to a doll since I had first re-connected with my childhood Barbie dolls as an adult. I loved Tyler's slightly-ingenue but also sophisticated sculpt, the wonderful body which was perfect for displaying clothing and the beautiful fashion vision of Robert Tonner. I immediately signed up for the entire first-year's line. The very first doll I took home with me was Party of the Season (pictured). I have continued to collect Tyler Wentworth ever since.
The Evolution of Tyler Wentworth
Through the years there have been many changes for Tyler, as she has changed for the times and for a changing doll collecting population. The original Tyler had a very simply painted face, pale skin and jointing only at the neck, shoulders and hips. Over the years her skin became a bit more tan, and her jointing much more complex (by the end of 2007, she had mid-jointing, knee, elbow, wrist and on some models even removable, changeable feet). Her facial painting also changed to become more complex and detailed over time.
Sydney Chase Gives Tyler Wentworth a Run For Her Money
When Sydney Chase (another Tonner Doll Company 16" fashion doll in the Tyler line) was released with her even more sophisticated look, many collectors flocked to Sydney, leaving Tyler and her devotees slightly in the dust. Although I probably sold more Sydneys over years to collectors than Tylers, my heart still belonged to Tyler and I've preferred her slightly more easygoing, younger look to Sydney to this day.
The New Tyler Wentworth
But, times change and tastes change and many collectors were clamoring for a more updated Tyler, and Robert and the other fine magic-creators at Tonner Doll Company listened. The new Tyler is also lovely, although definitely with a slightly older and more sophisticated look..to my eyes, a bit more like Sydney. I'm sure the new Tyler will grow on me in time, but since the original Tyler was my first true modern doll love as an adult doll collector, I think she'll have a very hard time winning the special place in my heart that the original Tyler Wentworth occupies.
