Daphne Dimples by Effanbee

About.com Rating 4.5

By Denise Van Patten, About.com

The Bottom Line

Another great fashion doll from Effanbee (Robert Tonner). Daphne has an absolutely winning face sculpt which has already proven to be a hit with collectors and repainters. Her platinum (white!) hair is unusual, and whether or not you like it is a totally personal matter (I actually like it!).

Pros

  • Incredible Face Sculpt
  • Wears Tyler Wentworth and Brenda Starr Clothing
  • Repaints Beautifully

Cons

  • Snow White Hair.
  • Doesn't Have Twist Waist or Other Torso Jointing.

Description

  • Part of the Brenda Starr line by Effanbee.
  • Lovely face sculpt which "reads" slightly older than many other fashion dolls.
  • Wide selection of clothing available, Brenda Starr and Tyler Wentworth outfits fit.
  • Daphne has snow white hair (the catalog says platinum) This is a plus or minus, depending on taste.
  • Prices vary from $59.99 for the basic doll (Divinely Daphne) to $169.99 for Black and White Ball.
  • Not all dolls in the 2004 line have been relased yet
  • Daqphne's story is that she is "an apprentice to Brenda, heiress and niece of Mr Livwright."
  • A regular reporter would never have a wardrobe like Ms. Dimples--good thing that she's an heiress!
  • All dressed dolls are limited to 1,500 pieces.
  • Divinely Daphne is an "Open" edition, but many Tonner dolls are produced for 1 year only.

Guide Review - Daphne Dimples by Effanbee

I was totally prepared to NOT like Ms. Daphne Dimples. I have enough fashion dolls in my life--I didn't need another one that fit my Brenda/Tyler clothes. Well, that's what I THOUGHT before my first Daphne Dimples doll arrived. My review is based on the St. Moritz Daphne Dimples, the first doll released. I fell in love with her face sculpt at first sight, and I like that she has an "older" look. Actually, I think this doll should be recast as the "heiress editor" of the newspaper and not the "heiress reporter apprentice" because, to me, she looks older than Brenda!

Weekend at St. Moritz is a beautiful outfit--Daphne is dressed to shop in a chocolate suede suit with leopard trim. A small complaint here--the snaps on the jacket of my doll shows, which ruins the "scale" for me a bit. Otherwise, this is one of my favorite suit outfits in the Brenda/Tyler line.

In any event, a repaint artist friend of mine has repainted a Daphne to amazing results--she also repaints beautifully (the original face paint is lovely, of course--I like the expression she has in her very-detailed blue eyes.

My only real complaint is I think this doll should have a swivel waist or rib cage for posing. It is nice that she has bending elbows and knees.

All in all, its another winning doll from the Effanbee//Robert Tonner team.
