Cabbage Patch Dolls For A New Generation
Beloved 1980s Dolls To Be Re-Born This Summer

By Denise Van Patten, About.com

The Cabbage Patch Kids have, once again, landed on their feet. After their heyday in the 1980s (you remember--long lines in the cold pre-Christmas dawns, fist-fights over the dolls at K-Mart) the dolls hit hard times after their fad ran its course. Coleco went out of business, and then Hasbro and Mattel took turns selling the dolls to the mass market, but the dolls never recaptured the hearts of little kids, and they never recaptured their early cute, cuddly "no two alike" feel.

Cabbage Patch Dolls For A New Generation

That is...until now. Play Along Toys and 4Kids Entertainment are re-introducing the Cabbage Patch Kids™® for a new generation of children, and also for Gen-X parents who fondly remember the dolls from their childhood. The company hopes that the doll will be an antidote to the "bratty dolls" which are all the rage today, as well as a break for children from our overly plugged-in, electronic world.

Truer To The Original Look And Feel

Unlike earlier re-releases of the Cabbage Patch Kids, Play Along and 4Kids are planning to stay true to the original look and themes of the dolls. The dolls will be "up for adoption" in stores around the United States by the end of the summer (and therefore, of course, available well in time to be placed under this year's Christmas Trees). Although I don't have photos of the dolls to share with you yet, I saw the dolls at Toy Fair and I think that fans of the earlier Cabbage Patch dolls will be happy with their quality and look.

Companies With Retro-Toy Experience

Play Along Toys has experience with nostalgic toys as the producers of the revived Care Bears, so they were a logical choice to bring the dolls back to the market. By the way, the original all-cloth Cabbage Patch Dolls are still being produced by the Original Appalachian Artworks (and they have been, continuously, since 1978) at Babyland General Hospital. You can find out more about these hand-stitched, one-of-a-kind soft-sculpture Cabbage Patch dolls at www.cabbagepatchkids.com

Believe it or not, there are over 95 million Cabbage Patch Kids already in circulation. Only time will tell if the new Cabbage Patch Dolls will be a plaything that a new generation of children will love.
