Guide Review - Star Trek Dolls - A Review of the Star Trek Dolls
It's great to once again have some dolls to boldly go where no dolls have gone before I was excited to see Star Trek dolls released for the 2009 movie. For the rest of this review, I am going to refer to the Star Trek dolls as figures, since the figures tread the fine line between action figures and dolls (molded hair, but cloth clothing). For this review, I looked at the McCoy, Spock and Original Spock figures--Kirk is also available.
The first thing I noticed was that the figures are 12 inches tall, so they are perfectly compatible with Barbie and other similarly sized dolls. I also noticed the great clothing colors (nice and subdued; they don't scream "child's plaything."
The Star Trek Command Collection figures are fully Poseable, with jointing at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrist, waist, hips, knees and thighs. Most joints are multi-directional, but the wrist and lower thigh joints only rotate. The Spock figures come with an interchangeable hand which is posed in the Vulcan salute.
The fabric used for the clothing is OK but the details are skimped on--imprinted silver banding and emblem on the shirt, and velcro closures for the clothing. I detest velcro in anything I am going to collect. The figures are priced at $29.95.
Accessories include a nicely-molded phaser, utility belt, boots, and communicator. The communicator doesn't flip open.
Overall, the figures are a must-have for Star Trek fans and science-fiction doll and action figure collectors. For the $29.95 price point, I would have liked to have seen a bit more detail on the clothing, but I am well-satisfied with the value because of the accessories and poseability.
One other comment--the figures have molded underwear, which is hideous--it's a pet peeve of mine with figures of any sort, as it limits re-dressing the figures for collectors (not to mention it looks ridiculous).
