Review Of The Power Puff Dolls

The anime darlings get their own line of dolls, and they're Cooool!

Ok, so you (and/or your children!)  have been sitting watching the Power Puff Girls on Cartoon Network for what feels like an eternity, wondering if a line of play dolls would EVER be produced!  Just when you were about to despair that a licensing deal would ever become a reality....Power Puff dolls are hitting Toys 'R Us and similar retailers in droves!

Obnoxious or Cute?

Well, much like the Power Puff girls in their series, the dolls are a little bit of both!  Watch which dolls you buy, especially for the very young set, as, just on the TV series, the dolls language gets a bit, ahh, "saucy" at times. Several styles of dolls are available, including a "Super Sounds" talking line, a small line of semi-soft dolls (under $5), "Super Sound and Lights" Dolls, and dolls with Play Sets.

Super Sounds

The Super Sounds series includes "Bedtime Bubbles" and "Style Salon Blossom."  The Bedtime Bubbles, the "baby" of the Power Puff Girls and thereby the cutest one, is most suitable for young children.  She comes with her own bunny slippers, glass for water, toothbrush, pretend toothpaste, real heart soap, small blanket, and octi doll (see picture below).   Her spoken phrases include "read me a bedtime story, " ahh, you're my best friend," "brush your teeth,"  and "we've got to save the lab before bedtime."   The heads the dolls are hard plastic and the bodies are cloth.

Style Salon Blossom not pictured) comes with hair styling items for her and for the kids.  Buttercup in this series comes with jewelry.  My only complaint with these dolls is that the head is so heavy, you have to really prop them up to stay upright!  My almost-5 year old solved this by putting the doll in a baby carriage.  These dolls retail for $19.99

Super Sounds and Light

This series doesn't only talk--it lights up, too, sort of like a bizarre night light.  The doll lights up and talks when you press its tummy.  Mostly innocuous Power Puff girls banter, but Buttercup in this series does say "I think they're asking for a heiny-whooping."  Bubbles says things like "Come on, lets go save people and stuff," and Buttercup's sayings include "Prepare to get Stomped!"  These dolls retail for $14.99

Laboratory and Pokey Oaks Play Sets

These dolls come in play sets including all sorts of accessories.  The Laboratory Play set (which you can get with any of the Power Puff Girls).  The Laboratory Play set includes lab equipment, a glittery Chemical X beaker, Professor Utonium (turned into a dog, of course) and some lab furniture.   The doll is hard plastic, more action-figure like than the others, and some of the equipment is cute, but the drawers, etc on the equipment don't open; the set seemed a bit static to me.

The other play set available is the "Pokey Oaks" play set, again available  with any doll.  It includes a hot-line phone, a chalkboard, a breakaway wall, and a variety of other accessories.
