"No Regrets"
Catalogued Doll Auction
Theriault's Auction Weekend

miss2000w.jpg (11309 bytes) On Saturday, Theriault's held its first 2000 "Marquis" catalogued auction of rare antique and collectible dolls. This auction, attended by several hundred doll collectors had over 230 lots.  Most dolls sold at or above estimate, showing what looks to be the continuing strength of the doll market in 2000.   Several rare Lencis sold well over their estimates, including a rare "Kufi" which sold for $12,500 against an estimate of $4,000/$6,000.   Kewpies, American cloth dolls and Terri Lees also sold strongly. as did the usual French bébés and German character dolls.

One of the biggest surprises of the auction was the very last lot sold.  The very last item of the auction was a 1950 hard-plastic Ginny predecessor called "Miss 2000." This doll sold for a remarkable $5,100, more than 5 times its presale estimate of $800/$1,000. This doll was manufactured by Vogue, Inc. and sold in 1950 as part of "The Half Century Group," which was a series of dolls representing each decade from 1900 to 1950, plus one doll dresseddisplay.jpg (14080 bytes) futuristically representing the year 2000 (hence, the Miss 2000 name).  These dolls are very rare, and seldom seen in such good condition.

As mentioned, Lencis sold very strongly.  In addition to "Kufi," another doll that sold high above its pre-sale estimate was a very rare Lenci character called "Bambino: (pictured below).  Made in 1930, and one of the rarest models from that era, the doll sold for $11,800, and the pre-sale estimate was $4,000/$5,000.  A reclining lady "Opium Smoker" by Lenci sold for $12,800, which is four times its presale estimate of $2,500/$3,000

Terri Lees continue to grow in popularity. At this auction, eight were sold in excellent condition.  Four sold for over $700 each, and the other three sold for between $425 and $650.  And, Kewpies continued to charm collectors,   Besides the Kewpie Hero (see below) all Kewpies at the auction sold at or above estimate.  A Kewpie soldier on horseback sold for $7,500 (presale estimate was $3,500/$4,500). Blunderboo Kewpies sold over $1,000, and many Kewpies with accessories, helmets, and the like sold over their estimates, including a Kewpie policeman, which sold for $2100 against an estimate of $500/$700.

Other auction highlights:

--A 1303 Simon and Halbig Character for the French Market sold for $13,500 (estimate $7,000/$9,500)

--A Bru Jne 7 (20") in original costume sold for $22,000 (estimate $15,000/$18,000)

--a 17" Huret Poupee with painted eyes, wood body, original folklore costume sold for $30,000 (estimate ($20,000/$25,000
