DOLLS PRICE GUIDE: Vintage Barbie
NO.4 PONYTAIL BARBIE in #954 Career Girl
SIZE: 11 1/2".
MARKS: On body Barbie T.M./Pats. Pend./ ©MCMLVIII/by/Mattel/Inc. Outfit is tagged with cloth tag.Barbie® © by Mattel.
DATE OF ISSUE: 1960
CHARACTERISTICS OF DOLL: Vinyl. Solid body. Eyebrows are curved, not arched, like ponytail Barbies No.1 and No.2. Doll has blue eyeliner (not brown; only No.3s have brown). Doll has solid body, not hollow like No. 5 and No. 6 dolls. Soft hair; came in brunette or blonde. Brunettes are more valuable than blondes, since fewer were made. This doll has the "greasy" face phenomenon that can happen with transitional #4 and #5 dolls. Doll maintains "tan" skin tone unlike dolls No. 1 through No. 3, which have had the skin tones fade over the years.
PRICE DOLL: Doll alone, $275 up to $400 mint. MIB $400-$500 plus.
PRICE OUTFIT: $75 to $100 plus when mint and complete. Outfit includes hat with red rose, red body suit, suit, black OT heels and long black gloves.
COMMENTS: Brunettes are slightly less common than blondes. Greasy faces are not favored by collectors, although this doll does not have a bad case (photo was taken without cleaning off the grease first). Outfit is very classic early Barbie and sought-after by collectors.
MARKET REPORT: Its been tough on vintage Ponytail Barbies in the last few years (2000-2003), with values generally decreasing, but top dollar still coming for truly mint, un-retouched dolls. Greasy face dolls can expect much less in the market. Many vintage Barbie outfits, including Career Girl, have fallen greatly in value due to the proliferation on eBay--Career Girl used to see for $150 plus in mint, mint condition in the late 1990s.
