CHARACTERISTICS OF DOLL: Doll's hair is actually a wig; doll was sold with three wigs and a wig stand--this one, plus a blonde bubble and shoulder-length brunette wig. with bangs. This was the first Barbie to have a molded hair-do. She also had a molded blue band on her head. Original swimsuit is white and gold, with a matching white and gold turban.
PRICE DOLL: Fashion Queens are not the most popular of the vintage Barbies, and can be found in mint condition for under $50 for just the nude doll, from dealers and at online auctions. With the wigs, wig stand, original SS and turban, the doll can sell for $175-$250 plus.
PRICE OUTFIT: Outfit includes drop-pearl necklace, white purse, dress and black open toe heels. Outfit without necklace, $30 to $40. Outfit with necklace, $60 plus; more if extremely mint. Outfit is shown with a reproduction necklace in picture at left.
COMMENTS: Many fashion queens have "melt marks" on their molded heads from where the wig plastic interacted with the molded hair plastic.
MARKET REPORT: The necklace of the "Lets Dance" outfit is very hard to find, and the necklace holds most of the value of this outfit (this is usually true with vintage Barbie outfits--the small accessories are the most valuable, because so few have survived in relation to the clothing (most of the accessories were lost, sucked up in vacuum cleaners, etc.). Fashion Queen Barbies have continued to trend downard in price from 1999-2003.
