DOLLS PRICE GUIDE:  Vintage Barbie Dolls

MATTEL: NO. 5 ASH BLONDE PONYTAIL BARBIE

SIZE: 11 1/2".

MARKS:    on body  Barbie T.M./Pats. Pend./ ©MCMLVIII/by/Mattel/Inc.

DATE OF ISSUE:  c, 1961

CHARACTERISTICS OF DOLL:  Vinyl. Hollow torso.  Curved eyebrows; blue eyeliner.  Solid body.  Eyebrows are curved, not arched, like ponytail Barbies No.1 and No.2.  Doll has blue eyeliner (not brown; only No.3s have brown).  Comes in striped B & W swimsuit.   Hair not as soft as #4s.  Some #5s can have "greasy" skin.  Doll maintains "tan" skin tone LIKE  #4 but unlike dolls No. 1 through No. 3, which have had the skin tones fade over the years.

PRICE:  Doll in this condition (repainted lips, restyled hair) under $200.  This doll sold in a private sale for $165, but also has a rough spot on the side of the neck and repainted eyebrows.  NOTE however that for the vintage Barbie doll collector on a budget, some of  these restored, slightly flawed dolls display absolutely beautifully.  Doll in MINT condition, $275 to $375.  Doll MIB, $400 to over $500.

COMMENTS:  Brunettes are slightly less common than blondes, titians (red hair) are MUCH less common.  This particular ponytail vintage Barbie has restyled hair and repainted lips, which greatly effects the value.   You can also use this doll as a cautionary e-Bay tale--note the photo--a less-than honest seller COULD try to pass this doll of as a doll in excellent condition, and a non-knowledgeable collector could be fooled.

MARKET REPORT: Slight decline in value over the past 5 years.
