DOLLS WEEK OF OCTOBER 19, 1999
NEWS
THE DEATH OF TOYS?
Don't miss the excellent TIME magazine article "Some
Assembly Reasonably Required" which looks at the basic problem that today's large
toy companies have: they don't bother to come up with new toys anymore! The
article also takes an interesting (and upsetting!) look at how YOUNG today's children are
when they STOP playing with toys!
ARTIST'S DECAPITATED BARBIE MIGHT NOT
MAKE MATTEL'S EXHIBIT
U.S. toy giant Mattel is organizing an "Art of Barbie"
exhibit, which will celebrate Barbie's 40th birthday, and which will be exhibited in
London's Natural History museum in December. However, Mattel said Monday it might
have to pull a piece from the show made by sculptor Marc Quinn. Rumor has it that he has
created a decapitated Barbie smeared with blood-red paint. For more information on this
latest art-controversy, see Deseretnews.com
WOMAN'S SHELTER TURNS AWAY BARBIE
DONATION
A 77-year old great-grandmother wanted to donate a gift of 300
velvet, handmade Barbie doll outfits to a women's and children's shelter in Oregon, but
the shelter staff rejected the gift, saying that Barbie contributes to domestic violence,
as a representative of "the shallow sexism of our culture. The great-grandmother
spent months making the clothing from scrap of fabrics, partly because she had no doll of
her own as a child growing up in the depression. There are TWO articles in Oregon Live about
this--including one where young fans of Barbie defend their favorite doll!
