DOLLS THIS WEEK-- OCTOBER 5, 1999
NEWS
ANTIQUES ROADKILL
If you are into old dolls, then you are most likely addicted to
the Antiques Roadshow on PBS. Don't miss this great article by Gerald Peary about
what goes on OFF camera during the production of the show! To quote the article:
"What you don't see on TV are the endless lines of hopeful losers: the people
who've toted paper bags of knickknacks, wheeled in handcarts of unmistakable trash."
A fascinating statistic is that of 6,500 people who showed up for a recent roadshow, only
30 actually get On the show! Read the article in the Urban Eye.
MATTEL STOCK SLIDES
Mattel, maker of Barbie Dolls and American Girls (the world's
largest toymaker!) , warned third-quarter profit will
miss forecasts by as much as 55 percent because of slow Learning Company software sales.
This sent the stock down yesterday (October 4) as much as 26 percent. Stock
shares fell over $4 to $12.81, the biggest one-day drop in almost seven years. The
stock has lost three-fourths of its value since March 1998 amid profit shortfalls,
sluggish sales, and the loss of top executives--putting chief executive Jill Barad's job
in jeopardy, an investor said. The drop in stock price was NOT due to Barbie sales,
which have been improving throughout 1999. Read more at CNet.com
MALE RETIREES CREATE ANTIQUE
REPRODUCTION DOLLS!
Stan Kramer and Ted Soares (both 74) are two retirees who
live on San Juan island. They USED to work in show business, and now they make
antique doll reproductions--over 1,000 so far! Don't miss this delightful story in
the Seattle Post-Intelligencer!--I
only wish that the Seattle Post-Intelligencer had included a photo of the dolls--I am
dying to see them! And, dollmakers will note the repeated error in the article
referring to the "glazing" of all the porcelain dolls.
