DOLLS THIS WEEK--AUGUST 17, 1999
NEWS
BARBIE BATTLES IT OUT WITH SINDY IN
ENGLAND
Dolls This Week goes International with a doll advertising war
in Great Britain! Both Barbie and Sindy (a British fashion
doll competitor of Barbie) have retooled their images, and started large advertising
campaigns gearing up to the Christmas season. Barbie's new, inspirational message
for girls is to "Be Anything!." And Sindy has gone, well, more
"teen," just like Barbie did last year, with a smaller bust line and less flashy
look. While the girls are fighting it out, a new doll, Tanya is being introduced, with
more of a hip, street-wise attitude.
NEW ARAB DOLL; LEILA
More International doll news. Barbie is not everyone's cup of tea, and the
Arab League is producing a doll called Leila, which will have an olive complexion, long
black hair and big, dark eyes and a more modest wardrobe than Barbie. The
doll is meant to give Arab parents an alternative to Barbie. Read about it in the Deseret News.
