BENOIT THE CAJUN

submitted by Patricia Duncan, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Benoit.jpg (13870 bytes)"Benoit" the Cajun is a one-of-a-kind, hand sculpted doll made by Joe and Jo Ann Du Plantis of Houma, Louisiana. (Houma is a small town in southern Louisiana, near the Gulf of Mexico.) I found this doll while walking down one of Houma's streets during a business trip. I happened to glance in a craft shop window, and there he was! I had been looking for a quality doll representing the Cajun people but, until finding "Benoit", I had not seen one I liked. Most "Cajun" dolls I've seen in souvenir shops are made out of corn husks, so "Benoit" is a real treasure. Unfortunately, I don't know how to contact the doll artists -- I think they should make "Benoit" a wife!
