30" GREINER PAPER MACHE

submitted by Denise Van Patten, Chico, CA collectdolls.guide@about.com

Galpapm.jpg (27279 bytes)This is a very large Greiner Paper Mache shoulderhead doll, 30", with its original 1872 Greiner Patent label.   The doll has its original finish, and wears an lovely antique cutwork gown.  her body is stitch-jointed muslin,  She has a lovely braid across the top of her head!

I am very fond of Greiner Paper Maches for several reasons.  First, these are some of the earliest dolls manufactured in America; the Greiner firm most likely started producing dolls in America in the 1840s!  Second, these dolls have an American Folk Art feel to them, in a way that a bisque doll never could.

This doll is one that shouldn't have made it to my collection!  I picked it up at an auction prior to a UFDC convention, many miles from my home.  I delightedly purchased the doll, then realized that I had to get her home on an airplane  (she is as large as my small daughter!).  Fortunately, I was able to borrow a trunk, and got her home safely.
