Hello, everyone!   I'm having an amazing doll-filled time at the Theriault's   auction weekend.  This is a short update--I'll be doing a FULL story about the auctions this week.barrois.jpg (31698 bytes)

DOLLS IN MOTION:  This auction was a real eye-opener for me.  I have never collected automata, although I have admired them.  It was a real treat to see so many of these dolls together, and to learn more about their history.  There were dolls that played musical instruments, blew bubbles, knitted and smoked at this auction--actually, the list of things they could do is VERY long.  Prices were strong at this auction, with most at or above estimates.   And, if you couldn't be at this auction but would like to SEE these dolls in motion, Theriault's is producing a video which will show off these dolls, plus provide historical information (out in late January, $29.95).

MAY I HAVE THE PLEASURE OF THIS DANCE? This was an absolutely fantastic auction of dolls (mostly antique).  I bought some wonderful items that I'll share with everyone when I return, but I HAVE to mention the lovely lady on the right, that I purchased at the auction!  Isn't she wonderful--a VERY large (WHAT was I thinking and WHERE am I going to put her) 34" poupee by Barrois, circa 1860.  I've decided that this VERY imposing lady is the PERFECT doll to be the site mascot.  I'm going to have a contest to name her--stay tuned!

home_chicklet1(1).gif (311 bytes)THERIAULT'S AUCTION WEEKEND SCHEDULE:   Here is the schedule for the rest of the weekend--come on down if you are in Southern California.  All events are at the Westin South Coast Plaza, in Orange County.  You don't have to be an antique collector to enjoy the auctions--there's a BIG vintage Barbie auction tomorrow, and always an incredible mix of dolls at the Discovery Day--something for everyone!

1/7/2001

3 auctions at the same time!

11am: Hertwig & Co. Archives Auction, 1890-1937 (9am preview)
12pm:  Barbie A Go-Go (vintage Barbie auction)  (10am preview)
12:30pm:  Discovery Day Auction (10am preview)

The Discovery Day auction is uncatalogued, and includes dolls antique to modern.

home_chicklet1(1).gif (311 bytes)HISTORY OF FASHION DOLLS ARTICLE IN BARBIE BAZAAR MAGAZINE:  I was thrilled to see the beginning of a series if articles on The History Of Fashion Dolls in the February issue of Barbie Bazaar magazine, that goes all the way back to the French Fashion dolls of the mid-to late 1800s (instead of starting with Bild Lilli!). As many of you know, I lecture on The History of Fashion  Dolls, and I have spent much time analyzing the similarities (and differences!) between the antique and modern fashion dolls.  Now, if Barbie Bazaar had only put a poupee on the cover--THAT would have been something (however, the photo of Lisette, one of next year's Barbie Fashion Model dolls, is fantastic!)

home_chicklet1(1).gif (311 bytes)AFTER-CHRISTMAS ONLINE SALES:  The online sales continue!  Don't miss the NEW Amazon.com outlet storeeToys also has a huge sale going on.  Find out more about the sales at online toy retailers in  Overstocked e-tailers must slash prices for clearance .
