DOLLS WEEK OF MAY 17, 1999
DOLL EVENTS THIS WEEK
The Modern Doll Show--Claymont, Delaware; May 23
Showcases dolls made after 1940; Wilmington Hilton, 10am to 3pm
Golden Gate Doll Show; Santa Rosa,
California; May 22
Big, popular show at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Held monthly
in Northern California. 10am to 4pm.
McMaster's "Treasure Hunt" Doll
Auction--Cambridge, Ohio. May 22
Uncatalogued Auction; Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center, Preview 9am; Auction 11am.
Theriault's Duet Auction--San Francisco Airport
Marriott Hotel, May 22-23
This is one of the new Theriault
"Duet" Auctions, which appears to be an auction half-way between a cataloged
auction (rare, mint, and otherwise choice dolls, with prior price estimates) and an
uncatalogued "Discovery Day" auction (mix of dolls, buyer beware, no price
estimates, but also no phone or mail bids). Duets have no catalogs, but
listings with condition descriptions and prices, and also no phone or mail bids. It
is an interesting concept, and I will be attending this auction, and will return with a
full report! Previews 9am each day; auctions start 11am.
DOLL EVENT REVIEWS: Have you recently attended a doll show, class, auction, or other doll event? Have your report or review of the event appear in "Dolls This Week!." Just e-mail your report to me at collectdolls.guide@about.com; you will be credited for the report, you will have my undying gratitude (since I can't attend them all!), and your web site link (if you have one) will appear as well.
SAD NEWS
Loss of ODACA Artist, Kathryn
Williams Kluhsman
From ODACA: ODACA Artist Kathryn Williams
Kluhsman passed away on 5/11/99. Kathy and her sister, Nellie began making dolls in
1982. Kathy began making doll clothes for NIADA artist Elizabeth Brandon soon after
graduation from high school. In 1984, Kathy & Nellie opened The Lampe Doll
Emporium not far from Branson, Missouri. Most recently the sisters worked together as The
Enchantment Peddlers in Reeds Spring, Missouri. Kathy sculpted all of the
original dolls, made the molds, painted the dolls, and designed the costumes. Nellie was
the business manager & helped out with doll production & costumes on some of the
designs.
Kathryn Williams Kluhsman was awarded artist membership of the Original Doll Artist's
Council of America (ODACA) in 1994. Kathy worked mostly in porcelain, but she also
produced cloth dolls with fabric covered composition
heads. Kathy's "Renoir Umbrella Dolls: Sophie, Marie, and Suzanne" were
produced
for the United States Historical Society and were widely advertised in major
doll magazines.
ODACA has created an on-line memorial to honor Kathy:
