NEWS

BARBIE PC STIRS CREATES CONTROVERSY
In fall of 1999, Mattel released the Barbie PC, a pink Barbie-themed computer for girls. The problem with the computer, say some critics, is that the $599 Barbie PC comes loaded with a little more than half of the educational software found on Mattel's companion computer for boys, the Hot Wheels PC.  Educators say that this computer "supports the stereotype that girls are only interested in fashion and boys are interested in more intellectual pursuits.''  Mattel has denied that the software on the PC is unfair to girls, and they claim that the Barbie programs (such as Barbie Fashion Designer and Detective Barbie) take up more space on the hard drive.

BARBIE AUCTION IN MINNESOTA
A recent auction in Minnesota nets over $125,000 for a long-time Barbie collector.

BRAZILIAN GIRLS WANT DOLL THAT LOOKS LIKE THEM
Little girls in Brazil go wild over a new doll called "Susi."  Susi is a fashion doll which competes with Barbie, but which has darker skin an more realistic measurements.  This Christmas, Susi outsold Barbie for the first time in Brazil--over 1.5 million were sold.  Read all about it in The Christian Science Monitor

KIDS WANT TOYS THAT WORK
Children don't just want toys of cameras, computers and microscopes--they want their own toys that WORK like the real thing.  Read about it at MSNBC.com.
