FRENCH BISQUE POUPEE in COSTUME of L'AUVERGNE FRANCE
DOLL: French Bisque Poupee in Costume of L'Auvergne, France.
SIZE: 14"
MARKS: Doll is unmarked
DATE OF PRODUCTION very early pouoee, c. 1865.
CHARACTERISTICS OF DOLL: Doll has a bisque shoulderhead, painted facial features. Doll has hint of smile. Brunette mohair wig over a cork pate. Body is a french kid fasihon body with shapely torso, one piece arm and legs and separated fingers.
PRICE: $1900 at auction.
COMMENTS: Lovely doll is identical to the earliest signed poupee models from Bru. Doll wears an elaborate costume from Puy-de-Dome in L'Auvergne. Outfit includes luxurious fabrics including silks and velvets. Dolls shoes (not shown) are wooden and leather sabots. Doll wears a brass-stamped "coeur coulant" necklasce and carries a woven basket of eggs. Although some collectors prefer glass eyes on poupees, I love the look of painted enamel eyes in early French fashion dolls such as this.
MARKET REPORT: Although painted eye French Fashion dolls tend to sell for less than glass-eye dolls, there are some exceptions--notably, very early dolls such as Huret or others from the early 1860s. Again, we see an all-original outfit, which adds to the value of the doll. Another generalization is that French Fashion Dolls in regional costumes sell for less than those in city or "town" costumes, but this does not always hold true where luxurious fabrics are used and outfit construction is of fine quality.
