DATE OF PRODUCTION:  circa 1937

CHARACTERISTICS OF DOLL:  Dolls have papier mache heads and limbs, costume-wrapped bodies.  Dolls are in their original boxes and have wooden stands.

PRICE:  For set, at auction, $425.

COMMENTS:  Dolls were dressed by women employed by the Aisejkwan Settlement of Jotoku, Tokyo, according to a printed price list that came with the dolls.  Other documents included with the dolls indicating that these dolls represent the Takenaka Family, that dolls could be specially commissioned, and also that the dolls were purchased at the mission in 1937.

MARKET REPORT: There isn't a huge collector base in the United States for vintage Japanese dolls--however, unusual sets like this are always in demand.  This set also has the cross-over appeal of being dollhouse dolls. Finally, the market value of this set is enhanced by the historical documents included with the dolls.
