Barbie Live In Fairytopia Opened This Month

Barbie Live In Fairytopia opened April 1st in Columbus, Ohio, at the Palace Theater. I’m in Columbus this weekend to give a talk on dolls for several local doll clubs (at a multi-club luncheon sponsored by the Olentangy Doll Cub), and several ladies I’ve spoken to here have already seen “Barbie Live In Fairytopia,” and they loved it ,as much as the children and grandchildren they took to see it.

According to the New York Times article about the opening of the show, the term for this type of a program is a “kidsical” which combines children’s theater with Broadway production values. The article also pointed out, quite correctly, that these days, a doll isn’t just a doll, but a “multimedia experience.” Not to be outdone, the Bratz dolls have their own DVD Movie and CD coming out just this week.

The New York Times article is excellent, although you must subscribe to the New York Times to view it. One interesting tidbit about Barbie Live in Fairytopia that I hadn’t seen yet appeared in the article--eventually, the Barbie Live in Fairytopia show will land in New York at Radio City Music Hall. Oh…also, it is revealed that the actressplaying Barbie, Erin Elizabeth Coors is a natural brunette not a blonde (gasp!). It is also revealed that the blonde hair is courtesy of a wig, not hair dye.
