Reflections on Fashion Continues To Delight Attendees

Wednesday July 13, 2005
The UFDC doll collector's convention in Philadelphia has now officially completed its fourth day; its hard to believe that there are only two more days left of the 2005 National Convention! Today, I literally left my hotel room at 5:30am this morning and I'm finally sitting down now, close to midnight, exhausted but happy from a full day of doll related activities. Really, I don't know how some of the oldest collectors manage to do it; I can barely keep up!

Yesterday was also a very full day, with six special exhibits opening for viewing--the amazing, museum quality exhibits included The Philadelphia Story, focusing on the history of dolls made in the Philadelphia area, A Rhapsody in Black, Brown and Beige, focusing on black dolls, The Enchanting World of Storybook Fashion (Nancy Ann Storybook dolls) and Fashion at Play, the Fashion Doll Artistry of Robert Tonner.

Also on Tuesday, the competitive doll exhibits opened, both for antique and modern dolls. There were literally thousands of dolls displayed, all vying for ribbons in categories as diverse as the mind can imagine--you could see a competition for Galoob Baby Face dolls in the same room as a competition for antique French Bru dolls! The evening is always exciting as attendees rush in to see if their dolls won a ribbon.

Doll events continued yesterday and today; today I attended my first ever breakfast event, The Morning Lesson, focusing on the French Fashion dolls of the 19th century Rohmer company. As wonderful as it was, I just don't think I am cut out to wake up that early to have fun at a doll convention!

My luncheon event was notable, since "Nancy Ann, Back in Fashion" included one of the new, hot off the presses, Nancy Ann Storybook dolls from the new Nancy Ann Storybook Company owned by sisters Claudette Buehler and Delene Budd. Much more on this later, including a photo of this adorable all-bisque doll sculpted by Dianna Effner and costumed by designer Londie Phillips.

Today also includes an Open Forum meeting for members to voice their concerns and ideas to the UFDC executive board, special camera and video times so collectors could take photos of the special and competitive exibits, and many other events, seminars and lectures. Tomorrow brings the annual meeting of the UFDC in the morning, plus the opening of the doll sales room to the public, and the Publisher's Preview in the evening.
