Realistic, Reborn Baby Dolls Are All The Rage

Tuesday April 27, 2004
The popularity of reborn baby dolls (baby dolls which are repainted and remade by artists to be as realistic as possible) has contributed to the great popularity of the realistic soft-skin baby dolls produced by companies like Berenguer and Ashton Drake.

Reborn baby dolls can cost hundreds of dollars for a doll which has had its hair rerooted, skin tone completely washed, features repainted, and body re-stuffed. Some of these dolls are so realistic that, at a glance, they truly look like a baby! Not everyone can spend hundreds of dollars on a reborn baby, and the soft-skin dolls like Welcome Home Baby Emily (pictured) from Ashton Drake and the new soft-skin dolls coming from Lee Middleton certainly are realistic enough, and they are generally under $200.00. If you are interested in learning how to have your baby doll reborn, see Introduction To The Reborn Art.

It’s a ton of fun! I never collected dolls in the past, but this whole reborning thing is like nothing I’ve ever done before! It’s like this amazing art where you create this incredible little moment in time… like you’re looking at a 3D picture of a newborn baby.

The supplies can be hard to find, but I have found a great selection at Secrist dolls. They have a training DVD that makes it a lot easier to learn how to do reborning. They make kits you don’t have to disassemble and strip the paint off in order to reborn them too. Plus, I’ve been really impressed with their customer service.

I love the Reborn dolls. They are exactly like a 3D picture, only better. 4D, that you can pick up, touch and hold. I never thought I’d be “into” dolls, but this is really fun. I never had a daughter *4 boys here* so I love making girly clothes and dressing mine doll up. Having lots of fun and hope to have an entire collection! Would love to learn how to make them as well if I have the ability. And those of you who make these wonderful “babies” hats off to you they are incredible!

Hi all, I have been reborning since 2002 when I was looking for models for my crochet’d afghans. Since then I have written 25 books/case studies/booklets and short Movies on CDs about the different aspects of reborning and options for creating more lifelike, anatomically correct Soft Body Patterns. I have approximately 25 reborn dolls that I have bought in the last 1 1/2 years, They have been wrapped up in a guest room and I really need to downsize so as to reclaim the guest room. Is there someone who can sell them for me, or take them to a show to sell? Most were purchased for between $300-$335. I am hoping to get at least $150 for each one. any suggestion?
